Our Mission

To provide information and support while encouraging hope and faith to all individuals who are coping with the effects of a severe and persistent mental illness or negative life situation.  While we have a  special focus on adults within the faith based community and African Americans who have been diagnosed with Schizophrenia, Bipolar, and other Psychotic Disorders we believe that anyone can benefit from the resources shared on this site.

Mental Illness

Mental illnesses are brain illnesses with symptoms that manifest in our thoughts, feelings and behaviors and if left untreated can negatively impact how we relate to the world around us.

Mental illnesses are highly treatable but it is a topic that some people, regardless of race and or religious beliefs, do not like to talk about. Why? The reasons are varied but the stigma associated with mental illnesses, generates misinformation that prevents people from reaching out and getting the help and support that they need.  But with faith, information and treatment people living with a mental illness can not only recover but can move forward and fulfill the plan of God for their lives.

Why Do We Do What We Do?

The Challenges
The challenges faced by individuals who have been impacted by a severe and persistent mental illness in the area of obtaining basic assistance, information and support
. The need for treatment and the impact of no treatment on individuals, families and our society at large.

Disparities Within The African American Community
Rates of mental illnesses in African American communities are similar to those of the general population.  However, many are in desperate need of mental health treatment. This disparity does not stem from a greater prevalence rate or severity of illness in African Americans, but from a lack of culturally competent care, and less or poor quality of care.  (Read More)

Importance of Faith/God in the Lives Of So Many People
For those who adhere to these practices can be instrumental in providing structure, relationship, and hope. In fact, "religious beliefs and behaviors are positively related to many indicators of emotional and social adjustment" (Richards & Bergin, 1999, p. 42). Religion and spirituality for those who adhere to these practices may be viewed as strengths that can be used to promote an individuals overall level of functioning and well-being.
